Poor Performance at the Election of Constitutional Court Judges May Impair the Authority of the Institution

The election of the two Constitutional Court judges from the Parliament dealt a serious blow to the prestige of this important organ called to guarantee constitutional order. Transparency of the decision was reduced to a formal game of procedures. A negative reaction from the European Commission followed. Urgent reforms such as the election of the judges with qualified majority and empowering citizens with the right of individual petition might prevent the inevitable suspicions of political influence on the election process.
